We flew in from Austin and it rained, which worried everyone except the photographs. The gray suited the day. We shot around the Mission first, then drove out to a spot we had scouted: a small cliff over the water on the southwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge, the tower dissolving into fog above the bay.

The setup was simple. A few individual shots, then both of them facing the water, which put Tira’s back to Karthik just long enough. He went down on one knee and waited through what he later called an agonizing forty-five seconds while she admired the view out loud. Then she turned around.
